Benefits to Drinking Lemon Water!

I was always that person that DID NOT want lemon in my water. I didn’t care for it. In my pre-paleo days, when I came across a muffin or anything lemon flavored I would pass. Why waste calories on a treat that did not involve chocolate?

I first saw one of my favorite paleo peeps post about drinking lemon water and thought, more power to ya because that sounds gross. But since it’s a person I’ve come to learn from I thought I’d do some research about it. Turns out there are a lot of benefits, especially for people suffering from heartburn and digestive problems! That seemed a little ironic to me, like why would you drink an acidic drink when you have acid burning your throat? But it totally makes sense I promise.

Here are a couple reasons you should add it to your daily routine:

  • freshly squeezed lemon juice provides a good dose of vitamin c
  • acidity from the citrus can help promote healthy digestion by encouraging appropriate stomach acid production which may reduce reflux and improve eliminations

Beware though, if coffee gets your morning eliminations moving, lemon water will most likely do the same.

My favorite way to enjoy it is to add fresh lemon juice to some hot water and drink it first thing in the morning. You can also make it like a homemade lemonade using fresh lemon juice, water and a touch of maple syrup.

Since struggling with SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) again, this lemon water has kept my bloating to a minimum. It only happens now if I have indulged in something I shouldn’t have and I can usually make it go away with a glass of hot lemon water.
